NOTES ON THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE CATALOG

1. The Aim

The aim of the periodicals catalog is to present the current periodicals in our collection as well as those that have been donated.   As of 2003 the total number of periodical titles in our library was 903.

2. The Order of the Catalog

The Periodicals are organized in two sections: medical periodicals and periodicals in other subjects.

a) Cataloguing System:

The List has been prepared according to the standards of the OBES (Common Document Acquisition) Periodicals Commission.  The periodicals are filed according to three criteria:

i)                   Title: Those magazines which use abbreviations instead of names are filed according to the first letter of their title; introductory articles (such as ‘a’ and ‘the’) are omitted. If electronic access available, it’s written as “internet’ten erişilebilir”. Electronic periodicals without current access is specified by date.

ii)                  ISSN:  The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) of each journal is listed. If the ISSN is not listed for a journal, this indicates that the journal has no ISSN code.

iii)                Year of acquisition at Başkent Library:  Periodical records include information on the year in which Başkent Library began (and, in some cases, discontinued or restarted) collecting the journals.

b) The Order of the Subject List:

The subject list consists of  two parts, each of which is arranged in alphabetical order. The first part consists of periodicals in medical subjects and the second part consists of other periodicals.  Medical and health sciences periodicals have been filed alphabetically.  Other periodicals are grouped under seven main subjects.   A publication may be included  in more than one subject according to its scope.

Our Medical and Healthcare index is based on the list of headings used by the American National Library of Medicine (NLM) for Index Medicus 2001. Since this list is international, the subjects are in English;  the Turkish translations of these subjects have also been supplied.   Other periodicals have been filed according to the 2001 Swets Blackwell Serials and E-Media Catalogue. Here also you can find the titles both in English and Turkish.
